19: along the shore

Dear Friend,

Sometimes it’s nice to stop talking and just take a quiet walk along the shore. The sound of the water, waves crashing onto the rocks or gently rolling in and out across the sand… either way, to me, it’s some of the very best and most relaxing music.

Have you ever used a recording of ocean waves to help you get to sleep? An audio recording of ocean waves can mask other distracting sounds in your environment so that you can drift off to the Land of Nod. Similar to 'white noise,' the sound of ocean waves is actually in the category of ‘pink noise.’ The colors of sound are described by a friendly scientist in this video: Can Noise Have Color?

And while we’re thinking about color, have you ever wondered about the color of water? This video explains Why is Water Blue?

What do you think of blue, is it your favorite color? As you know, the pigment blue is not the same as being able to see the color blue. Blue paint, blue dyes, blue glass, along with natural blue eyes, blue feathers, blue flowers… Though we see things that appear to be blue, we’re learning that blue is not actually what it seems. Hmmm. Here is a video that explains: The challenge behind synthesizing the color blue.

And, I have to ask you, since we’re still walking along the shore of the big blue ocean, isn’t it true that you have always wanted to learn to surf? Well, here’s a helpful little video. Get yourself a wide beginner-board, do the best you can, and follow your dreams, Learn to Surf!
